Comparing

Riyadh is a very different place to what it was 30 years ago. It used to be a very small city. Now it has over 4.7 million people, it is the capital city of Saudi Arabia and the seat of government.

They had changed the city, it looks like they deleted the entire city and build it again. Thirty years ago there were very few buildings made of mud but now there are a lot of modern ones built with concrete. People didn't use to live in the city centre but now there are lots of people choose to live downtown in these high rise buildings.

There has also been a big influx of immigrants making Riyadh much more multi-cultural than it was in 1990. Now you can see a great variety of nationalities in the street making modern Riyadh a colorful and interesting place to live. Recently the Indians, Lebanese, Turkish and Syrian have emigrated here. As a result, Riyadh now has lots of international Clothing Stores, restaurants.

However, with the rise in population has come an increase in traffic and traffic problems. Riyadh now has very high car ownership and very poor public transport. The buses are cheap and infrequent. Traffic jams are very common now. People also have less leisure time than they used to 30 years ago as they are busier now and it takes them longer to get to and from work.

Riyadh is a little more expensive place to live compared to thirty years ago. Houses are now some of the cheaper in the world compared to salaries. Houses used to sit on large pieces of land but now the blocks are smaller and there is a lot of sub-division especially in areas close to the city centre.

To sum up, Riyadh has changed a great deal over the last 30 years. Generally I think it has become a better place because there are more immigrants and more buildings like the Kingdom,Al-Faisaliah Tower and the new apartment blocks. However the things that are not as good as thirty years ago are the traffic jams, expensive houses and the lack of leisure time.

My partner in class

    Olivia and I don't have very much in common but we were almost both born in the same year and we both like romantic movies.


She has studied English longer than me. She has been at UNITEC for 3 months whereas I have been here for only two months and 3 weeks. She came here because she wants to study Travel at Massy University so needs to have an IELTS score of 6.5. I want to get a job as an architect so I hope to study Architecture at UNITEC and then get a Master degree in America.


I'm the youngest in my family and I have 14 brothers and 12 sisters older than me who lives in Saudi Arabia so I don't see them often. The last time I saw them was two months and three weeks ago, before I came to New Zealand. Both my parents are a life and they now in Saudi Arabia. Olivia parents pay to UNITEC to let their child to study English and growing up with her studies.


She hasn't done very much traveling but would love to go to Paris in France with her boyfriend.
She would like to live in Paris if she could because she thinks it would be very helpful than China to save money. Also she loves money very much. About her daily life, she wakes up at 7:30 a.m. She drives to school by her car without breakfast, eat lunch at12 p.m, diner at 6:30 p.m. and she sleep at around 11 p.m.

.. Two weeks to improve ..

     I'll talk about this beautiful two weeks that we spend it with the most great excellent teachers at Unitec.

In the last two weeks special program, we learned about almost 
every thing in English, like grammar, spelling, vocabulary, reading, 

describe a chart, writing paragraph and write a dairy everyday.

We publish our writing on the internet by Bologger website to make a comment on each other blogs and look at the other people ideas.

.. Biography ..

     After I finished the high school of General, I graduated from the College of Technology in Riyadh, and took a diploma in architecture.
Two weeks later I found work in the contracting company in stainless steel, attached to the largest companies in Saudi Arabia, only to gain experience.
I got married after three months.
I had the opportunity to complete my studies in New Zealand, I didn't refuse, because I love the study.

.. Life in SA,NZ and plan ..

     The last things I remember about my home in Saudi Arabia are, what my house looks like and my family faces when the cry. I miss them all.


I live in an apartment in Auckland which is much smaller than my house in Saudi Arabia, I pay taxes here for every single thing, but in my country we don’t have taxes.


My plan for the next holiday is to dive around the South Island in New Zealand with my wife. So I’m going to rent a car with GPS after that I’ll start my trip.

..To be an Architect ..

      Architecture is how to build a building form commensurate with the purpose at a given cost and in the duration of a specific time. For example, house, school or a hospital...etc

To be an excellent architect you have to be patient. You should have a good imagination. You have to think more than one time before you say anything or draw any line, because the construction takes years to finish. Any mistake with the design makes you a bad designer or any mistake in the design will probably occur in the construction of the building. So the rule is think before you decide.

The question is why Architecture is important in our lives?

It is important for more than one reason. First of all, each building in the world should be designed by an architect to be useful, saving time and money from any mistakes.

The second reason is to arrange a timetable for the work of contractors and subcontractors and there are unresolved problems so far in the courts because of the lack of a timetable and duration for the project.

So any building has a different design from another building, whether the high volume of the building or the number of its floors, even if the environment that will be built by, any normal human that is being built.

.. The coldest place on the Earth ..

    The captains of the journey were Scott from England and his assistant Oates. On the other side was Amundsen from Norway.
The main idea is about race to the South Pole, what problems did they face there and how Amundsen won the race at the end.

My opinion is that the story is boring; because I don’t like to see people fight on something takes them to the hell by themselves.

.. The workforce in Zooland ..

   The chart shows the percentage of the workforce in Zooland between 1990 and 2010. The main trend was that people have left service providers jobs and people have become knowledge workers in this time.

In 1990 the percentage of service providers was around 63 percent but in 2010 it has become almost 31 percent. There are almost half as many service providers as there were in 1990.

In contrast, the percentage of knowledge workers in 1990 was around 15 percent but in 2010 it has become almost 47 percent. There are more than half as many knowledge workers as there were in 1990.

.. My Opinion ..

I partially agree…because…so

Government should pay for healthcare for the country's citizens.

I partially agree with the above statement because the citizens who are the members of the society who are the country, work in the country to be great community, they will fight for it, pay tax to support it and protect the country from anything it will happen, like a war or disaster. So the point is. If you want to get something you should pay the price. The government should open free hospitals and clinics for all the citizens.

 .. My Goal ..

        My plan for the next five years is to finish my English course in one year. Complete my major at Unitec in two years. Get a Masters in Project Management from America in two years.

     But my goal is to get a Doctorate degree in Architecture studies after ten years, because if I have that degree, my salary will be higher, I'll have more responsibility in my work, in every company it will be impressive on my Curriculum Vitae (CV). So I can choose whatever I want and what ever I like, my age will be around 34. In that position all the people will call me Dr.Bader and I will love to be called that in that time.

     I want to build a new city or something like that in my country and to be famous in doing specific new things nobody else can do.
